Visa's New FANF (Fixed Acquirer Network Fee) is Here.

Published 04/14/2012

Effective April 1, 2012, Visa will begin billing Acquirers a new monthly Fixed Acquirer Network Fee (FANF), which may vary each month. The amount of the monthly fee charged is determined based on the variables outlined below.

A. For Card Present Transaction Processing (excluding fast food and merchant aggregators): The applicable monthly fee will be calculated based on the number of active processing merchant locations (per individual card acceptor ID) and your Merchant Category Code (MCC), per taxpayer ID, per month. These will run from $2.90 per location for businesses with 1-3 locations all the way up to $85 per location for buinesses with over 4,000 locations.

B. For Card Not Present Transaction Processing (including merchant aggregators and all fast food Visa sales): The applicable monthly fee will be determined based on monthly gross Visa sales volume per taxpayer ID, per month.  These will run from as low as $2 per location all the way up to $40,000.

The rate per location will be a combination of fees if the business runs both card present and card not present transactions.

These fees will be passed directly to the business owner and will most likely get very complicated.   In addition...

As of April 13, 2012, Visa will implement a "Transaction Integrity Fee" assessed at $0.10 per item. This fee will be applied to all U.S. issued Visa Debit and Prepaid card transactions that are not Custom Payment Service (CPS) qualified.
